Pearl Buying Guide

Choose with Confidence in Six Steps

The right pearl jewelry brings together the appearance you love, a comfortable fit and details that suit your life. With so many types, sizes and designs to choose from, it helps to make those decisions in a simple order.

Use these six steps to narrow your choices, understand what matters to you and know what to confirm before ordering.

Your six-step starting point

  1. Pearl type: Find the appearance you enjoy.
  2. Jewelry style: Consider how you will wear it.
  3. Size and fit: Check the proportions and measurements.
  4. Color and metal: Choose a combination that feels right.
  5. Budget and quality: Decide where your priorities lie.
  6. Final checks: Review the description, photographs and policies.
STEP 01

Choose the pearl type for your preferred look

Start with the appearance you are drawn to. Pearl families offer different starting points, but none is automatically the best choice for everyone.

Pearl type Consider it if you enjoy…
Freshwater Variety, soft colors and both classic and individual shapes
Akoya Round pearls, bright reflections and a traditional strand
Tahitian Deeper colors, shifting overtones and a distinctive presence
Golden South Sea Golden tones, generous sizes and a rich, satiny glow

These are typical appearances, not a quality ranking. Explore our individual Pearl Type guides for more detail, then assess the particular piece you are considering.

STEP 02

Match the jewelry to the way you will wear it

Think about your everyday wardrobe, preferred fastenings and how often you expect to wear the piece.

  • Earrings and pendants: Useful starting points for enjoying pearls without committing to a full strand. Check earring weight and fastening, or pendant dimensions and chain length.
  • Necklaces: Consider the neckline you usually wear and how the pearls work together in color, size and luster.
  • Bracelets: Pay attention to wrist fit, clasp security and contact with desks or other hard surfaces.
  • Rings: Consider the setting and your routine. Remove pearl rings for activities involving impact, cleaning chemicals or prolonged water exposure.

No pearl type is scratch-proof. Even substantial nacre does not make a ring or bracelet suitable for every activity.

Buying a gift? Notice the recipient’s existing jewelry. Their preferred metal color, earring style and necklace length offer practical clues.

STEP 03

Check pearl size, jewelry length and fit together

Pearl size is usually stated in millimeters. As a styling reference, 6–7 mm can feel delicate, 8–9 mm more noticeable, and 10 mm or above more substantial. These are suggestions, not quality grades.

A photograph may make a pearl appear larger than expected. Check the measurements with a ruler and remember that the setting adds to the overall dimensions.

For necklaces and pendants

Check the full necklace length, any extender and whether pendant dimensions include the bail. Common length ranges offer a starting point:

  • 14–16 inches (about 36–41 cm): A shorter option; check neck fit carefully.
  • 17–19 inches (about 43–48 cm): A common range for shorter strands and pendant chains.
  • 20–24 inches (about 51–61 cm): A longer option with more room below the neckline.
  • 28–34 inches (about 71–86 cm): An extended length for a longer silhouette.

Use a soft tape or string to see where a length sits on you. Neck size, posture, clothing and pearl diameter all affect the result.

For other pieces

Check earring drop and weight where provided, bracelet length against your wrist measurement, and the stated size or adjustment range of a ring. Larger bracelet beads can reduce the internal fit, so length alone may not tell the whole story.

STEP 04

Choose color and metal as a combination

There is no single pearl color that everyone should wear. Compare white, cream, pink, gray or golden shades against the clothes and metals you already enjoy. If possible, view pearls near your face in neutral daylight.

Overtones can change their appearance with the light and viewing angle. Ask about color treatments rather than assuming that a soft shade must be natural or that a vivid one must be dyed.

Read the metal description separately from its color. Solid gold, sterling silver and gold-plated silver have different compositions and care requirements. A gold-colored finish does not by itself mean solid gold; plating may wear with use.

Check the components: Look at the chain, clasp, earring posts and backs as well as the main setting. If you have a known sensitivity, ask about the alloy and the parts that touch your skin.

STEP 05

Set your budget around the qualities you value

Decide what you most want to see when you wear the piece: lively luster, a clean visible surface, a particular color, a round outline or an individual baroque form.

If you want to adjust the price, compare slightly smaller sizes, near-round shapes or different pearl types. Small features positioned near a setting may be less noticeable than marks on the front. These are trade-offs to assess in the actual piece, not guarantees of value.

For a meaningful price comparison, look at similar pearl types, dimensions, visible quality, metals and construction. Neither a higher price nor a larger pearl automatically makes a piece the better choice.

Our Pearl Quality Guide explains the seven quality factors. Read the criteria behind AAA, 3A or 5A labels rather than assuming they mean the same thing across sellers.

STEP 06

Confirm the details before ordering

A clear listing should help you understand both the pearls and the finished jewelry. Before deciding, check:

  • Pearl identity: What type is it, and is any stated origin documented or explained? Cultured pearls are genuine pearls grown with human assistance.
  • Treatments: Is the color natural or treated, and are relevant enhancements disclosed?
  • Measurements and materials: Are pearl dimensions, jewelry length and metal composition clear?
  • Photographs: Will you receive the photographed piece or a representative example? How much can shape, color and surface vary?
  • Reports: If a laboratory report is supplied, what item and findings does it cover?
  • Delivery and returns: Review current dispatch estimates, shipping charges, applicable import costs and return conditions, including any exceptions.

Ask for another angle or a short video when a particular detail matters to you. If an essential point is unclear, resolve it before ordering.

Plan for gentle care

Choose a piece that fits the care you are comfortable giving it. Put pearls on after perfume and cosmetics, wipe them with a soft cloth after wear and store them away from jewelry that could scratch them. Remove them before swimming, cleaning or activities that expose them to chemicals or knocks.

For strung pieces, consider how the clasp operates and ask about restringing or repair options if those services matter to you. Our Pearl Care guide covers everyday care in more detail.

Before you decide

  • Does this piece fit the way I plan to wear it?
  • Have I checked both pearl size and jewelry fit?
  • Do I understand the metal, color and disclosed treatments?
  • Have I seen enough detail to judge the appearance?
  • Do I know what item I will receive and which policies apply?

Frequently asked questions

What is a good starting point for a first pearl purchase?

Start with a design you already enjoy wearing. Studs, a simple pendant or a short strand can be useful options. Choose the pearl type and size after considering the appearance and fit you prefer.

Should I choose a strand or a single-pearl piece?

A strand offers a continuous pearl look and requires attention to matching. A pendant lets one pearl become the focal point. Consider the finished design and total materials rather than assuming one format always costs less.

How do I know whether a price is reasonable?

Compare genuinely similar pieces and look for clear explanations of quality, materials and construction. If the description does not explain an important difference, ask about it.
