Pearls on a Tuesday

How to Wear Pearls Every Day (Not Just for Special Occasions)

A little style column from Zorapearls

Let me say something that might sound a little bold for someone who sells pearls: I don't think pearls belong in a jewelry box waiting for an occasion.

Somewhere along the way, pearls got filed under "wedding," "graduation," and "holiday dinner." But a pearl doesn't know what day it is. It looks just as lovely next to a coffee cup on a Tuesday morning.

So in this column, I'd like to share a few thoughts on how pearls can fit into an ordinary day: what to wear them with, who gets to wear them, and why you don't need a reason. No rules, just ideas you can try with the clothes already in your closet.

The piece you're saving

Most of us own one piece we're saving. A strand from a relative, a pair of earrings from a milestone birthday, a ring that feels too nice for the grocery store.

Here's what I've come to believe: the piece you're saving is usually the one that would make a plain day feel a little better. Pearls look warmer and softer against skin and fabric than they ever do in a drawer. So if you take one thing from this column, let it be this: wear the good one on an ordinary day.

Let the outfit stay simple

The easiest way to wear pearls every day is to stop dressing up around them.

A baroque pearl drop with a white T-shirt looks relaxed rather than formal. A short strand tucked just inside a denim collar feels easy, not fancy. A pearl bracelet next to a plain watch looks like it belongs there, and you stop noticing it's jewelry at all, until the light catches it while you're reaching for your coffee.

The trick is contrast. Pearls glow softly, so they look best against things that are simple and well-worn: cotton, denim, knit, linen. One pearl, one plain outfit, and you're done. If you'd like to try a brooch, pin a single pearl to a linen jacket, a scarf, or the strap of a bag you carry everywhere. It's a small detail that makes the whole outfit feel considered, without any fuss.

Pearls were never only for her

Here's something I love thinking about. For centuries, pearls were worn by kings, emperors, and courtiers as much as by queens. Somewhere along the way, we decided they belonged to one kind of person. I don't think that was ever the whole story.

I don't believe pearls have a gender. A baroque pearl on a thin chain looks wonderful under a plain shirt collar, whoever is wearing it. A single stud, a pearl ring on a strong hand, a short strand worn open at the neck: none of these is "for" anyone in particular. They're for whoever likes the way they look.

Jewelry should be about what makes you feel like yourself. If a pearl does that, it's yours.

Every age, every closet

Pearls are also the easiest jewelry to share across ages.

If you're young, you may feel pearls belong to your mother or grandmother. Try them with a hoodie or sneakers and the feeling usually disappears. The uneven shape of a baroque pearl is especially good at this, because it keeps things looking relaxed.

If you've worn pearls for decades, you already know how well they age with you. Let them out of the "good occasion" box too. A long strand over a soft sweater, a brooch on a coat, a larger baroque pearl you wouldn't have chosen years ago: pearls can be bolder than people expect, and bold has no birthday.

It's also lovely when pearls get passed around. A daughter borrows her mother's necklace for a casual dinner. A friend tries on your earrings and doesn't want to give them back. Nobody's wearing them the "right" way. They're wearing them their way, and that's the point.

You don't have to match

A few permissions, since I'm giving them out:

You can wear one pearl earring and one plain hoop. You can mix silver and gold. You can stack a bracelet and a ring that were never meant to meet. If it feels like you, it works.

Your turn

This week, open the drawer. Take out the piece you normally save and wear it tomorrow with whatever you already planned to put on. Notice if you smile when you catch your reflection around lunchtime.

If you'd like to find something for your own everyday style, my classic pearl collection and baroque pearl collection are a good place to begin. And if you have an idea in mind, I also make custom pieces, so just message me and tell me what you're picturing.

Until next time: wear them on a Tuesday.
