Baroque Pearls vs. Classic Pearls: What’s the Difference, and Which One Is for You?
When I tell people I sell pearls, the first question is almost always the same: “Wait, what’s a baroque pearl?”
Classic pearls: the ones you picture in your head
When you imagine a pearl necklace, you’re probably picturing classic pearls. They’re round (or very close to round), smooth, and softly glowing. Think of a grandmother’s necklace, a wedding day, or a simple pair of studs that goes with everything.
- They’re timeless. A strand of round pearls looks right at a job interview, a wedding, or brunch on a Sunday.
- They’re easy to wear. You don’t have to think about what to pair them with. They just work.
- They feel calm and polished. If you like a clean, elegant look, this is your style.
Round pearls are also rarer than you might think. Most pearls don’t grow perfectly round, so a truly round, smooth pearl takes more time to find. That’s part of why they’ve been treasured for so long.

Baroque pearls: the ones with personality
Now for my favorites. Baroque pearls are the ones that don’t grow perfectly round. They come in teardrops, ovals, little waves, and shapes that don’t have a name at all. Some look like tiny drops of moonlight. Some look like small sculptures. And here’s the honest truth: no two are exactly alike. When you hold one, you’re holding the only one of its kind.
- They’re one of a kind. Nobody else will have the same piece as you.
- They feel modern and relaxed. A baroque pearl on a simple chain looks effortless, not formal.
- They have real character. The shimmer shifts with the light, and the unusual shape makes people ask, “Where did you get that?”
A lot of people think a baroque pearl is a “flawed” pearl. I don’t see it that way at all. The shape is what makes it special.

So, which one should you choose?
Here’s a simple way to decide.
Choose classic pearls if:
- You want something you can wear with everything.
- You’re buying for a wedding, a graduation, or another formal moment.
- You like clean, traditional, elegant jewelry.
Choose baroque pearls if:
- You like pearls that feel personal and a little different.
- You want something you can dress up or wear with jeans and a T-shirt.
- You enjoy pieces with a story and a bit of surprise.
Can’t decide? That’s completely fine. Many of my customers wear both. A classic pearl strand with a baroque pearl pendant is one of my favorite combinations, and it’s exactly what “Classic or Creative” means to me.

A few quick tips before you buy
-
Look at the shimmer, not just the shape.
Good pearls have a bright, glowing surface (we call this luster). Dull, chalky pearls usually mean lower quality.
-
Pay attention to the surface.
Tiny marks are natural and normal for pearls. Deep cracks or lots of rough patches are not.
-
Choose what makes you smile.
Rules about “the right pearl” don’t matter much. The best pearl is the one you’ll actually enjoy wearing.

Final thoughts
Classic pearls give you elegance. Baroque pearls give you personality. Neither one is better. It just depends on who you are and how you like to feel when you wear your jewelry.
If you’d like to see both, take a look at my classic pearl collection and my baroque pearl collection. And if you have questions about a piece, or you’re not sure which style suits you, just message me. I’m always happy to help.
